Police Constable Mohamed Kanu, attached to the Operations Support Division (OSD), is in custody for the alleged murder of a soldier of the Forces Intelligence Security Unit in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

Head of Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Koroma told Politico that the incident allegedly took place on Wednesday 18th April between 7 and 8am in the Gloucester Village area in the Freetown Peninsular.

He said the evidence they had gathered so far implicated the police officer.

"We reasonably believe that the police personnel committed the alleged offence," Superintendent Koroma explained.

He said the weapon which the OSD personnel used to commit the murder was in their custody being treated as an exhibit.

The officer commanding Homicide Syndicate at the CID headquarters in Freetown, Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police John Sesay, explained that they ordered a post-mortem examination to be conducted on the deceased and, according to him, the examination confirmed that the soldier did die of gunshot wounds.

“We had earlier referred the case file to the law officers who advised us to charge the suspect with murder" Sesay said.

Detective Sesay refused to be drawn in on the motive behind the alleged murder, saying "we reserve that for the court."

In September 2014 an OSD officer was arrested for allegedly murdering a certain David Kargbo at Allen Town in the east end of Freetown. The Suspect was investigated and subsequently charged to court.
