Civil society slams Margai’s outburst

By Mustapha Sesay

Executive Director of the Centre for Accountability and the Rule of Law,  Sierra Leone (CARL-SL) says the utterances made by Charles Francis Margai are ”puffy” and represent the “voice of a frustrated man.”

Ibrahim Tommy made these statements in an interview with Politico on the arrest of Mr. Margai by police.

He said the statements were “ill-advice and unguided” and that the police had a constitutional role to play which was to enforce law and order thus, if in their view they considered those statements made by Mr. Margai as having the tendency of undermining state security then by all means they were right to initiate investigation.

Tommy referred to the land dispute between Mr. Margai and the First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma which led to Margai’s outburst, as “a shame” to have dragged on for three years without a clear solution to it. He said this was also a pointer that had led to Margai’s arrest.

The CARL executive director however called on Mrs Koroma to come up with a statement in line with the accusation that she ordered the release of the two OSD personnel who were allegedly detained for the assault on the driver and security guard on the said land.

He urged the police not to prejudice the matter as one between him and the first lady as “no one is above the law”.

He refuted the argument that the action of arresting Margai had the proclivity of undermining state security saying it had no implication on democracy.
