Sierra Leone postpones population census

Following weeks of acrimony, the Sierra Leone government has postponed the census scheduled for April this year, a statement from the office of the President issued late last night said. It set the new date for the end of the year.

New ultimatum for Africell

Newly appointed executive chairman of the Sierra Leone National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), Momoh Konte, has announced a 2-week ultimatum for Africell, one of the country’s leading mobile companies, to change its tariff denomination from Units to Leones in compliance the commission’s regulations.

Today is World Cancer Day

Every February 4 is commemorated as World Cancer Day. This year`s is no exception and in Sierra Leone, despite the domineering effect of the ongoing Ebola epidemic, some people are determined to ensure not just that the day is felt but also the effect of the burden of the disease on the country is exposed.

The 2015 commemoration is being held under the theme: ‘Not beyond us’. The point being made is that the solutions to addressing the disease do exist and are within our reach.

Sierra Leone Ebola baby survives

Twenty-one-month-old Kadiatu Kargbo and her mother Isatu Conteh were discharged and declared Ebola-free on Saturday after two weeks of treatment at the Hastings centre (PTS 1).

A five-year-old and an 11-year-old were also discharged as part of six people discharged at a ceremony at the police academy where the treatment centre is located.

Bloodshed in Sierra Leone opposition

A Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) meeting held last Sunday in Kenema ended in bloodshed. Several party members were beating and wounded.

The party members were in a meeting to turn the sod for the construction of its regional office when a group, described by the party`s Publicity Secretary in the Kenema district as disgruntled, arrived and allegedly disrupted the gathering. Brima Dawson Kuyateh said the group was headed by a party executive member in the district named as Adama Kallon.
