Sierra Leonean appointed FAO's East Africa coordinator

Sierra Leonean Patrick Momoh-Nuwah Kormawa has been appointed Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa (SFE) for the UN`s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He will also represent the Organization at the African Union (AU) and to the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Mr Kormawa`s appointment takes effect from 2 May 2015, a dispatch signed by its Director-General José Graziano da Silva and forwarded to Politico newspaper from the FAO country office, notes.

P’ment orders Kenema City council to redo budget

The parliamentary oversight committee on Finance on Tuesday ordered officials of the Kenema City Council (KCC) to redo their budget proposal submitted to the committee over ‘inconsistencies.’

Hassan Sheriff, APC MP, chairman of the committee, said they`d summoned the KCC on the instruction of the Speaker of parliament and the Majority Leader.

Another candidate enters SLPP leadership race

The longest serving Member of Parliament from Pujehun district in the south of the country has told his party's executive in the district that he would be a candidate in the coming leadership contest for the main opposition SLPP.

Hon. Ansumana Kaikai called on the district to support his bid saying, "I believe it is time for me to become president of this nation as I have worked tremendously even at the time of president Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah to ensure democracy and development especially in Pujehun district."

IGR report calls for improved social services

A report by the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR), launched last Friday, has called on government to ensure improved social services in the country.

The report singled out education, health and water and sanitation as the least funded government sectors. Only 9% of the national budget is allocated to the three sectors, it found.

Andrew Lavallie, IGR Executive Director, said the launching of the report was necessary since government had no procedure for communities to complain about “bad services.”

New Petroleum institute unveiled in Sierra Leone

Amidst talk of a possible oil and gas discoveries, some Sierra Leoneans have began positioning themselves to take advantage of the opportunities coming with that.

The Institute of Petroleum Managers is one such group. The institution is an affiliate of the Cambridge University in England, and it has recently introduced new professional courses that aim at developing the country’s human resources base to meet the challenges ahead.
