IMC reacts to High Court ruling

Sierra Leone’s media regulatory body, the Independent Media Commission (IMC), has challenged a High Court ruling in a matter between the commission and the Independent Observer Newspaper.

Justice Allan Halloway delivered his ruling on Friday in Freetown, noting that the IMC had been accurate in the procedures it used in dealing with the matter before the case was taken to court by the newspaper’s lawyer and that the commission had not violated the principles of natural justice in the matter.

Kono District Council damns decentralization report

The Kono District council has condemned the report of the 2013 Comprehensive Local Government Performance Assessment System (CLoGPAS), which was released in March this year by the Decentralization Secretariat (DecSec) of the ministry of local government.

DecSec’s report is annual, and focuses on the performances of the 19 local councils in the country.

Court Martial: New documentary evidence challenged

Defence counsel in the on-going trial at the Court Martial presided over by Judge Advocate Alhaji Abu Bakarr King has tendered in court a letter from the Ministry of defence as part of the defence`s evidence.

The letter which was authored by Major Taluva in the Defence Ministry   requested that the accused, Major Philip Shenks, face summary dealings in respect of the allegation for which he (Shenks) was standing trial at the court martial.

Sam-Sumana changes lawyer - Charles Margai takes over

Sacked Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana has replaced his lawyer Blyden Jenkins-Johnston with veteran politician Charles Francis Margai in his ongoing case in the Supreme Court.

The appointment of Mr Margai to the hot seat was confirmed in a letter done by Mr Sam-Sumana himself, a copy of which was obtained by Politico.

Space for free expression shrinking - SLAJ President laments

The space for freedom of expression is gradually shrinking in Sierra Leone, Kelvin Lewis, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) lamented over the weekend.

He cited a recent spate of clampdown on both the traditional media and social media users as suggesting hard time for journalism in the country and this, he said, required journalists to reflect thoroughly.

Media's role in fighting Ebola can`t go unnoticed - SLAJ President

The role the media played in the fight against the Ebola virus disease can`t go unnoticed, Kelvin Lewis, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) said Friday.

He told the opening of the 44th SLAJ AGM the association was determined to pursue its role as contributor to national development as it demonstration in the course of fighting the deadly epidemic that has claimed thousands of lives since May last year.
