Sierra Leone, UN sign Ebola Recovery Fund agreement

The government and the United Nations have signed an agreement establishing the Sierra Leone Ebola Recovery Fund (SLERF), paving the way for the creation of an account to fund the country`s post-Ebola development plan.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Dr Kaifala Marah signed on behalf of the government, alongside Dr Gabriel Rugalema, Country Representative of the Food and Agricultural Organisation, who also doubles as the head of the UN system in the country.

Koroma’s ratings drop - Afro Barometer

The latest survey of Afro Barometer has revealed that Sierra Leoneans have less trust in public institutions, including the presidency, than they had in 2012.

The report, launched on Wednesday, 16 December, also revealed a reduction in popularity of President Ernest Bai Koroma and his governing All Peoples Congress, APC.

Sierra Leone Religious Council slams Abortion Law

Barely two weeks after its enactment, Sierra Leone’s new Abortion Act, has met with a major stumbling block after religious bodies warned the president against signing it into law.

Politico learnt that the influential Inter Religious Council (IRC) has asked President Ernest Bai Koroma not to sign it.

The ‘Safe Abortion Act 2015’ was passed by parliament on Tuesday December 8, about five years since campaigners began lobbying for a reform of the current law in existence since 1861.

Sierra Leone risks losing much needed funding for its malnutrition programme because of corruption and illegal sale of therapeutic foods meant for malnourished children, a health official warned on Wednesday.

World Bank on poverty in Sierra Leone

World Bank country manager, Parminder Brar, has said that the Bank would support Sierra Leone’s efforts to create a strong social safety net system that would identify and assist extremely poor households.

Mr. Brar told journalists last week that the social safety net project would make a direct cash transfer of about Le 150, 000 to 23, 000 households in four districts. He said these four districts which comprise Kono, Bombali, Moyamba and Western Rural, were among the poorest districts in the country.

Police ‘ready’ to tackle crime

In the wake of the disturbing proliferation of gang violence, the Sierra Leone police say it is ready and armed well enough to quell any violent activity.

Director of Operations at the SLP, Assistant Inspector General Al Sheikh Kamara, said the police would not allow anyone to threaten the general peace.

“We don’t want people to threaten the nation into submission. So our men are ready; we now have pepper spray and stun gun to resolve any violent activity,” he told a press briefing last week.

FBC commissions extra classrooms

After a long wait, Fourah Bay College (FBC) has officially unveiled the Voice of Children (VOC) Building for students and staff of the Mass Communications Department

The unveiling on Tuesday 15th December, 2015 was done at the University of Sierra Leone (USL).

FBC is one of the three constituent colleges that make up the USL.
