Slow pace of justice fuels sexual violence in Waterloo

The slow pace of the justice system is encouraging a rise in sexual and gender-based violence in the western rural district, an activist has warned.

Yeama Baba Conteh, the head of Woman for Woman, a community-based organization in Waterloo which propagates justice for abused women and girls, told Politico that multitude of cases of sexual and gender-based violence were packed at the High Court in Freetown without any hope that a judge would address them.

Sierra Leone police question Senior Presidential Adviser over rubbish

The Criminal Investigations Department of the police yesterday called in the special adviser to President Ernest Bai Koroma and questioned him on a deal to dispose of waste materials from Lebanon into Sierra Leone.

Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, who was briefly interrogated inside the crime office at their headquarters on Pademba Road for his role in thewaste scandal, was later released to state house, according to a police source.

Race to showcase women’s empowerment in Sierra Leone

The Forum of African Women Educationalists (FAWE) has announced an essay writing competition designed to showcase the impact of decades of efforts on the promotion of women's issues in Africa.

Anyone can submit an entry explaining their experience in promoting efforts in powering women and girls. Beneficiaries too are eligible to partake in the competition which is open to six of over 30 countries where FAWE operates.

Brewery admits to health risk posed by its waste products

The Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL) has admitted that wastes from its production facility pose health risk to nearby communities and hopes to minimize this risk after what it says is a 2.2 Million Euros investment it has made in the area over the last year.

The management of the leading brewer of alcoholic drinks in the country is also looking forward to limiting environmental hazards caused by used bottles of its products through maintaining its bottle recycling programme.

Women are an important instrument of social change - Adonis Abboud
