Women split over Sierra Leone abortion bill

A meeting by prochoice campaigners on Wednesday turned out to be a disappointment after it emerged that most of those invited were against the controversial piece of legislation stuck in parliament in the face of widespread opposition from religious leaders.

The meeting was convened by the Women’s Forum Network which said it was meant to get other women to understand the necessity of the proposed ‘Safe Abortion Act 2015’.

“Falling tree” kills boy, 12

Police in Pujehun have confirmed the discovery of the body of a 12-year-old boy believed to have been killed by a falling tree.

Crime officer attached to the Pujehun main Police division, Detective Guy Patrick Chico Lansana Bussu, told Politico that the matter was reported on the 8February by the town chief, Lansana Fullah.

He said the incident took place in a community known as Makorma in the Gallines Perri chiefdom, some seven miles to the district headquarters.

Accountant General calls for independence

The Accountant General’s office has called for greater independence as a requirement for accountability and transparency and for effective functioning in the ministry of finance in Sierra Leone.

Kebbe Korouma told journalist at the ministry’s offices in Freetown that there could be no openness “if you cannot talk about transparency and be accountable”.

‘FGM underestimated’ - says UN

The UN children's agency,Unicef, hassaid that the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is more widespread than has been reported, according to a recent report.

The report said millions more girls and women worldwide were victims of the widely criticized practice than initial estimates indicated.

It stated that at least 200 million girls and women alive today had undergone cutting, as FGM is also called.
