West Africa Exams Council in credibility crisis

The credibility of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Sierra Leone is at stake following incessant allegations of examination malpractices, leading to the seizure of hundreds of results.

The examination body was also under pressure by civil society organizations to explain massive failures in successive examinations.

'Socfin a threat to Africa’s forests’ – new report says

Activities of the French agro-investment firm, Socfin, pose serious threats to forests, communities and wildlife in Africa, a new report has found.

The findings by Greenpeace revealed that the company’s activities have led to conflicts with affected communities where they operate.

Socfin, Société Financière des Caoutchoucs, is partially owned by the logistic firm Bolloré group which has a 38.75% controlling stake. Bollore itself has a lucrative deal manning the Freetown ports, which has itself attracted a lot of concerns.

The new Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL) report, 2015 has accused the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) and the National Ebola Response Centre (NERC) of failing to implement recommendations that will improve the management of Ebola funds.

MoHS mulls new Teaching Hospital

Minister of Health and Sanitation, MoHS, Dr AbubakarFofanah, on Tuesday presented a bill seeking the establishment of a new Teaching Hospital.

But the Bill titled the ‘Teaching Hospitals Complex Act 2016,’ stumbled in the well of parliament as some MPs said because of some many inconsistencies it needed to be sent to the pre-legislative committee.

Kono condemns mayor’s suspension

There has been an outpouring of condemnation of the suspension of the Mayor of Koidu, Saa Emerson Lamina.

Civil society activists and politicians from both the SLPP and APC have questioned the “illegal” procedure followed to effect the decision.

Mayor Lamina was suspended by the Office of the President following a request by the Minister of Local Government, Diana Konomanyi. He has rejected the decision, describing it as “unlawful and politically motivated.”
