SLAJ poised to be taken Or, to be led?

When members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) step in Bo next week the whole country’s attention will be on the south side district.

SLAJ will be there for its triennial conference, where it is scheduled to elect its new executive officers. Like every other election at the association before now, this one is close. The epic challenge is between incumbent President, Kelvin Lewis and his Vice President, Stanley Bangura Jnr.

It’s an open secret that the current executive of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has been embroiled in so many quarrels.

Observers have blamed this unpleasant situation on various factors, depending on who you talk to. Some said it’s as a result of clashes in personal interest; others linked it to the president dictating how the association should be run without due consideration of the opinions of other executive members.

The management and residents of Sierra Leone’s only official home for the aged have chastised government for neglecting the institution leaving them virtually dependent on hand-outs.

King George IX Memorial Home for the elderly was established in 1988 under the auspices of the government which later transferred control over to the Sierra Leone Society for the Welfare of the Aged.

Irish Aid supports food security in Sierra Leone

Irish Aid has donated ICT equipments to the Agriculture ministry. The equipments which are computers and printers are meant to support the district secretariats of the Early Warning System (EWS) program.

Irish Aid is an international aid agency and a lot of their work focuses on nutrition. They expect the district secretariats to gather more specific data for chiefdoms, towns and even villages.

Housing Ministry warns over illegal construction

People who construct houses without permit risk having their structures demolished, the Ministry of Works, Housing and Infrastructure has warned residents of Pujehun.

An official said they were stepping up sensitization against construction in disaster prone zones like swampy areas which have contributed to recurrent flooding and loss of properties in the disaster prone district.
