Nurses protest in eastern Sierra Leone

Nurses and other health workers at the government hospital in Kenema protested on Friday over the arrest of three midwives recently posted there to bolster the medical team in the fight to beat down the high maternal mortality rate in the district.

The newly posted midwives, Matilda Sandi, Haja Conteh and Isatu Kallie, were issued with a court order to vacate the premises allocated to them by the Medical Superintendent, Dr Prince Masuba.

US$130m for Sierra Leone energy sector

The World Bank Group on Monday announced the approval of a US$130m project aimed at boost Sierra Leone’s epileptic energy sector.

The money will go to funding ongoing efforts to stabilize generation of electricity in the Western area of the capital, Freetown and its environs.

50/50 Group FBC chapter revamped

The 50/50 Group Sierra Leone has revamped its Fourah Bay College Chapter which was on the verge of collapsing.

50/50 group is a non political, non-governmental organisation founded in 1997 and it advocates for the empowerment of women through their inclusion in the national governance structures. The organization believes that although peace had returned to the country through great sacrifices of women, the ideal platform where women could exhibit their talents was not available.

Sierra Leone-Australia alumni appeal for scholarships

The President of the Sierra Leone- Australia Alumni Association, Usman Conteh, has urged the government of Sierra Leone to engage with their Australian counterparts to resume their annual scholarship program.

Conteh made this appeal during the launch of the association at the Miatta Conference Hall last Thursday.

Koidu Ag. Mayor clashes with CSOs

The Acting Mayor of Koidu City, Aiah Bartholomew Baima Komba, is at loggerheads with civil society organizations after labeling them as evil.

Councilor Komba, who called civil society groups as “evil society”, accused them of being responsible for all the violence that’s occuring in Kono district. He was speaking over the week end [Sunday 26 June] on the issue of the controversial mining at the Congo Bridge in Koidu.

Over police killing, Husband demands justice

The husband of a woman allegedly killed by stray police bullet is demanding justice.

Abdul Salam Bangura’s late wife, Fatmata Jarret Bangura, died after a bullet hit her during clashes between police and locals in Tombo in May this year. The incident was sparked by a riot between the ‘Orjeh’ society and the Muslim community on May 21 in Tombo in the Western Area Rural District.
