Le10 million supports for Ebola Survivors

The Sierra Leone Association of Ebola Survivors (SLAES) has urged government and humanitarian organisations to prioritise issues affecting Ebola orphans in the country.

They made the call at a ceremony marking the presentation of educational materials worth Le10 million ($1,300) to Ebola Orphans. Money for the donated materials came from Harvard University.

Sierra Leone makes inroads over Polio but challenges remain

Official figures are yet to come out but health authorities are hopeful that the latest mass polio immunisation campaign in Sierra Leone will break new grounds in terms of coverage.

The exercise which lasted from 24 to 27 March is this year’s second mass vaccination against the virus that causes poliomyelitis [Polio], a debilitating disease that leads to paralysis and deaths.

Sierra Leone drops in Human Development

Sierra Leone has been ranked amongst the worst performers in the 2016 Global Human Development Report (GHDR), notably falling three places from the previous year in the Human Development Index (HDI).

The country declined from 176 in 2014 to 179 in 2015, among 188 countries and territories ranked in the HDI, according to the report which is published by the United Nations Development Program.

Sierra Leone government urged to show commitment to electoral process

A civil society umbrella group has urged the Sierra Leone government to demonstrate commitment to the country’s electoral process amidst concern of a possible delay in next year’s much anticipated poll.
The Standing Together for Democracy Consortium (STDC), which is monitoring the electoral process, says the government should ensure timely and adequate support to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) to enable it roll out its activities in line with the Electoral calendar.

Sierra Leone sacks House Majority Leader

The governing All People’s Congress (APC) party of Sierra Leone has sacked its leader in parliament in a move attributed to his presidential ambition.

After three years in post, the House Majority Leader, Ibrahim Bundu, MP, was replaced on Wednesday by his deputy, Leonard Fofanah, sources in parliament said.

"Trafficked" Sierra Leonean kids found in Liberia

The Sierra Leone embassy in Monrovia says two children allegedly trafficked to Liberia after going missing from a government Safe House have been found.

The children, the subject of a cross-border trafficking investigation, were reported missing early this month. The home, which is operated by the Liberian Ministry of Children and Social Protection, provides temporary shelter for children in distressful situations such as domestic violence, rape and other sexual and gender-based violence, as well as those trafficked.
