Sierra Leone opposition plans to sue Police

The opposition Coalition for Change (C4C) party has said it is considering the possibility of suing the Sierra Leone Police over the “unlawful” treatment of its members. The party’s Secretary General, Koigor Aloysious Foh told Politico that their lawyers will decide on this by next week.

His statement comes at the backdrop of violent skirmishes between the Police and the supporters of C4C over the weekend when their former presidential caondidate Chief Sam-Sumana was prevented from entering Port Loko Town.

Information Minister calls on teachers to be patriotic

Minister of Information and Communication, Abdul Rahman Swaray, has called on teachers to espouse patriotism and nationalism in the execution of their duties as educators.

Mr Swaray said teachers should ensure that the best quality education is provided for the children of Sierra Leone to prepare them for the future challenges facing the country.

WB Regional Director concludes tour with praises for Bio administration

The World Bank’s regional director for Sierra Leone, Ghana and Liberia, Henry Godfrey Kerali, is leaving after a four year tour, of duty with lots of praises for the Bio administration.

Mr Kerali who has been based in Ghana from where he oversees the Bank’s operations in the three countries, on Monday met with President Julius Maada Bio to bid farewell. At the meeting at State House, he praised the administration for its handling of the economy, particularly with regards domestic revenue mobilization.

Le 37 Billion of stolen money recovered in Sierra Leone

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone has recovered Le 37 billion of money stolen from public coffers, the head of the agency has said. 

Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala on Monday presented over Le7 billion to President Julius Maada Bio at State House, where he also announced an impending Le 21 billion to be received in the next six months from former officials found to have misappropriated public funds. This follows an earlier presentation of Le 9 billion to the president.

Buses to be banned in central Freetown

The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) is contemplating a ban on long buses entering the busy Commercial Business District (CBD) of Freetown, Politico has learnt.

Officials say the move, which is under active discussion among relevant stakeholders in the transportation sector, is geared towards reducing heavy traffic in the city center.
