Paramount Chiefs back Gola Rainforest protection

The Paramount Chiefs in the seven chiefdoms hosting the Gola Rainforest National Park (GRNP) have vowed to protect it through responsible use of the forest.

The traditional leaders made the commitment at a conference on forest conservation where they also committed to embark on community forest conservation, as part of efforts to preserve Sierra Leone’s flora and fauna.

New PLAN program to focus on equality

The international aid agency, PLAN International, has disclosed plans to launch a new girls empowerment initiative across Sierra Leone.

The initiative dubbed ‘Girls Get Equal’ will target schools and communities in all 16 districts of the country, officials said on Monday.

Girl empowerment in Sierra Leone has been the major focus of most organizations. Girls growing up in the country face problems like teenage pregnancy, early marriage and access to education.

ECOWAS boosts university and technical education

The ECOWAS support comes in the form of scholarships from which many university students have benefitted especially girls in various universities and other institutions that provide higher technical education.

Sierra Leone parliament revokes controversial state of emergency

Sierra Leone’s lawmakers have revoked the controversial State of Emergency on sexual violence amidst the introduction of a bill seeking to amend the existing sexual offenses law.

The move comes five months after the declaration of the Emergency by President Julius Maada Bio, in response to an alarming rate of violence against women and girls.

NRA increases revenue by Le596bn

The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has announced on Wednesday that they have increased their revenue collection by Le596 billion in 2019.

The authority said it collected Le2. 229 trillion from January to May this year, adding that by the same time last year it had collected Le1. 633 trillion. This, according to officials, does not only placed the country’s revenue performance on target, but it’s also 51 percent higher than what was collected within the same period in 2017.
