As Sierra Leone journalists vote this weekend, we talk to the candidates

On Saturday, 13th July 2019 the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) will elect a new President and various officials to serve in its executive council.

The new President will replace Kelvin Lewis, who has served two terms, as per the association’s constitution.

This year’s election will be contested by current Secretary General, Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah and a former Secretary General, Mustapha Sesay. Both candidates share significant experiences in journalism and SLAJ politics.

Landmark ruling against China's Shandong in Sierra Leone

The Chinese mining company, Shandong, successor of the defunct African Minerals Limited (AML), has been ordered in a landmark ruling to pay the sum of Le1.6 billion in end of service benefits to a former employee.

The ruling on 9 July by a Freetown High Court judge will serve as a major morale booster to hundreds of former employees of AML and Shandong who have been seeking to receive their severance benefits. This case was filed by Musa Alie Bangura, who served AML between 2004 and October 2013.

Opposition political parties in Sierra Leone have renewed calls for electoral reforms, amidst efforts to resolve rising political tensions in the country.

The latest appeal was made during a meeting between representatives of the country’s top political parties and the head of the government’s bench in Parliament, Hon. Sidi M. Tunis.

Le 33.4 Billion paid to former Govt officials

The Sierra Leone government has announced the disbursement of Le33.4billion as part payment of retirement benefits for ex-officials who served in the administration of former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The government in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance said the money meant for the former president, his vice president and cabinet ministers, among others, represents 50 percent of what they are owed as end of service benefits and gratuities.
