Sierra Leone’s opposition leader says country risks recession amid bad economy

The defeated presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress in the disputed June 2023 polls, Dr Samura Kamara, has decried the tax regime, saying Sierra Leone’s economy is bad”, with the country at a “high risk of going into stagflation or recession”.

In an exclusive interview with Politico, the former finance minister and central bank Governor said that “nothing is moving, which is not good for the people of this country”.

World Bank says 30,000 under-5 children risk dying in Sierra Leone

Thirty thousand Children under the age of five are at risk of death due to inadequate nutrition, from October 2022 to August 2023, according to the World Bank’s Sierra Leone Economic Update (SLEU) 2023.  

The report which was launched on the 27th October 2023 explains that over three hundred thousand children under the age of five are stunted, whilst one hundred thousand are wasted.

Sierra Leone negotiates tariff with Mobile phone operators

The Government of Sierra Leone has successfully negotiated a proposed tariff increase with Mobile Network Operators (MNO) to ensure a win-win situation, according to a report from the Strategic Communication Unit at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.

From the 120%, tariff increase that was proposed, the report said the government, got the service providers “to agree to a modest increase in voice calls, and an even lower if not negligible increase, in data”.

The Sierra Leone Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (SLEITI) Multi-stakeholder Group (MSG) has completed a nationwide dissemination of the 2020 and 2021 EITI Report following its publication in May this year.

The dissemination according to SLEITI officials is an approach designed to ensure that stakeholders are engaged in a dialogue about natural resource revenue management and to discuss the positive contribution that mineral resources make to the economic and social development of the country.
