Health concern over supermarket and hotel waste in Aberdeen, Sierra Leone

Residents in a section of Aberdeen have expressed concern over a liquid waste spilling around the Aberdeen Roundabout, which they say has created an eyesore and poses public health threat.

The situation which has gone on for over a year is believed to be caused by two business entities nearby: Delicious Hyper Market supermarket and Home Suits Hotel. The liquid appears to originate from the compounds housing both facilities.

Alarm over high maternal deaths in Pujehun

Despite being home to what’s arguably the best maternal health hospital in Sierra Leone, Pujehun is still recording one of the highest rates of maternal deaths in the country, which has left health authorities and campaigners concerned.

Latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) indicates that the district has recorded 18 deaths in the last eight months (January to August), which the campaigners say is unacceptable.

Finance Minister admits to economic hardship in Sierra Leone

Minister of Finance Jacob Jusu Saffa has finally admitted the prevailing hash economic reality and said that the government needed to put in more efforts in order to stabilize the situation.

And to ensure this, Mr Saffa said, will require policy reviews geared towards enhancing domestic revenue mobilisation and job creation, among other measures.

Sierra Leone police are investigating two US deportees

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has confirmed the deportation of 16 Sierra Leoneans from the United States and said they are investigating two of them believed to be non-Sierra Leoneans in possession of the country’s passport.

The deportees who arrived in the country on Wednesday August 14, are part of hundreds of foreign nationals being flown out of the US as part of the Trump Administration’s clampdown on illegal migrants.

The Ministry of Mines last week made public the decision to terminate the mining lease with Shansteel, a subsidiary of Shandong, for allegedly breaching various aspects of its agreement with the government and the country’s mining laws.

Major disagreement between Sierra Leone Govt & SL Mining

The dingdong affair between the iron ore miner SL Mining and the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources continues unabated.

The company, which is 100% owned by the US-based Gerald Group, operates the Marampa Mines in Lunsar in northern Sierra Leone and was slammed a 21-day suspension for various alleged breaches, including contravening provisions of the Mines and Minerals Act of 2009.  While the suspension from carrying out mining activity has elapsed, the government has stopped the company from making any shipment.
