Kenema Hospital gets equipment support

The Government Hospital in Kenema has received equipment support worth Le100 million from Sierra Leonean philanthropist John Biriwa, who is based in United States. Biriwa said the donation is part of his way to support the government’s effort in providing better health care for its citizens.

The donated items include surgical trays, anesthesia tubes, adult respiratory materials, pediatric supplies, tube feeding sets, blood drawing tube, beds, chairs, surgical drapes, infants feeding tube and blood infusion.

Court officers, NRA workers in ACC net in Kenema

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating four people – two court clerks and two workers of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) - in Kenema for alleged misappropriation of funds.

High Court clerk Abdul Karim Kargbo and Deputy Master and Registrar Peter Kamara, allegedly connived with NRA officer Omaru Tarawally and a volunteer staff of the revenue authority, Ansu Simbo to misappropriate the money received as payment of fines by family members of a convict.

Sierra Leone president turns sod for construction of factory

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday made a symbolic turning of the sod to kick start the construction work on a factory for the manufacturing of baking equipment.

The SONOCO Assembly Plant Facility, situated at Wellington in the east end of Freetown, will also house a training center for food technology and related electrical and mechanical maintenance technicians. The investors behind the project said it’s a response to the call of the government to contribute to the industrialization of Sierra Leone, thereby creating jobs and better the lives of the people.

ECOWAS bank presidential election ends in stalemate

Finance Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have postponed the election of the president of its regional bank after they failed to agree on a consensus candidate at a meeting in Freetown this week.

Three candidates were shortlisted for the head of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) and the successful candidate was expected to be unveiled at the 17th Ordinary Meeting of the Board of Governors of the bank, convened in the Sierra Leonean capital on Monday.

Kidnappings raise alarm in Pujehun, southern Sierra Leone

Police and civil society activists in the country's southern Pujehun district say they are worried about the "unusual kidnapping" of children in the district recently. 

"We are worried about students walking long distances out of the reach of the school buses to reach schools in the district headquarter towns. We as civil society organizations totally condemn the act of kidnapping, most especially the vulnerable group [children]," said Ibrahim Swaray, the Pujehun District Civil Society Coalition Chairman.  

Sierra Leone asks for more support from EBID Bank

The Sierra Leone government has called on the ECOWAS Bank to increase its support to the country.

The call was made by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh at the just concluded meeting of the Board of Governors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), held at the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel in Freetown.
