New maternity hospital opens in Sierra Leone capital

President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday opened the newly reconstructed King Harman Road hospital, which has been upgraded to a full-fledged Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital.

The 68-bed facility, located in Brookfields, Freetown, is expected to ease pressure on the country’s main maternity hospital, Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, commonly known as Cottage. Cottage is located in the eastern part of the city, while King Harman Road Hospital is located in the west end.

Sierra Leone Presidential Guards found guilty

An investigation into the physical assault of two female journalists has found at least one member of the Sierra Leone Presidential Guards culpable. The panel recommends the dismissal of the perpetrators, only one of whom was identified. They were also to make a public apology.

The report of the investigation was presented on Thursday to the Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray.

Sierra Leone varsity students concerned over re-sit exams

Students at Fourah Bay College (FBC) have expressed concerns over the re-sit examination notice issued by the college. According to the notice that was released on Monday the examination has been slated for 21st -25th October 2019.

According to the notice, the exam is meant for students in Final Year General, Year 3 General, Year 2 Honors (Law Dept.), and Post graduate studies. It also includes students in Diploma and Certificate Programs. Students who have reference will have to pay Le150, 000 per module. 

ACC inaugurates North-west regional office

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Sierra Leone on Thursday inaugurated a new office to serve the northwestern region of the country.

The office situated in Port Loko Town, the headquarters of the North-Western Region, is a major deliverable of the current leadership of the Commission.

Kenema Red Cross condemns nationwide strike call

The Sierra Leone Red Cross Kenema Branch has distanced itself from calls for a nationwide strike over an ongoing dispute between the national leadership and the Western Area branch.

Chairman of the volunteers in Kenema, Momoh Vandi, said their branch doesn’t support the Western Area branch in their decision because they thought the strike was designed to sabotage the image of the organization.
