New ActionAid Sierra Leone boss to prioritise "people power"

The incoming Executive Director of the campaign group ActionAid Sierra Leone has said he will focus on building institutional capacity as his top priority.

Foday Bassie Swaray, who is expected to assume the mantle of leadership at one of the leading Non-Governmental Organizations in the country this December, said his top most priority will be improving on the capacity of its staff, with particular emphasis on women.

Residents of Docorty community have complained to Politico over the lack of pipe borne water in their community. They said the community has gone more than two months without pipe borne water, following a sudden halt of a Guma Valley water extension project in the area.

Docorty is a vast community located at the back of Wilkinson Road, Freetown. The community has thousands of inhabitants, most of whom have stretched their settlements right to the heart of Thompson Bay.

2 charged with murdering a journalist in Sierra Leone

Two people have been finally charged for the murder of Sierra Leonean journalist Ibrahim Samura, 17 months after his death.

Samura died on June 6, 2018, apparently from injuries he sustained when he was beaten earlier in March during the general elections.

He was reportedly attacked and beaten by some senior members of the then ruling All People’s Congress (APC) party.

Sierra Leone Standards Bureau “under-resourced”

The Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) has raised concern over the institution’s incapacity to effectively carry out its mandate of ensuring a safe society through a quality inspection regime.

Prof. Thomas B. R Yormah, who was speaking at the government’s weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Information and Communication on Thursday, said the Bureau lacked the necessary resources to enable it perform its functions.

Sierra Leone Presidential guard punished for beating journalists

A member of the presidential guard found guilty of beating two journalists has been removed and sent for retraining, the government of Sierra Leone has said.

Minister of Information and Communication, Abdul Rahman Swaray, said on Thursday that the government will also refund all the expenses spent for medical treatment by the two female journalists from SLBC who were beaten while covering a football match at the National Stadium.
