Justices of the Peace plead for backlog pay in Sierra Leone

Two Justices of Peace (JPs) in Pujehun and Bo districts in Sierra Leone have told Politico that they haven’t received their backlog of salaries for up to 27 months.

The two JPs are part of seven JPs in the Southern region of the country, of whom four are already dead, who have not received their pay within the period. They blamed the delay on the judiciary.

Sierra Leone launches first policy for the aged

Sierra Leone on Thursday launched its first National Aging Policy which seeks to cater for the aged considering how vulnerable they get mostly as a result of their different conditions.

Among other things the policy ensures old people get access to basic services and are accorded the opportunity to fully participate in the daily life of their communities.

Stakeholders discuss reducing inequality in Sierra Leone

Government and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have concluded an engagement session in Freetown aimed at reducing inequality in Sierra Leone in the areas of public spending, taxation and in the labour market.

The policy forum was part of a commitment by both Movement against Inequality Sierra Leone (MAISL) and OXFAM Sierra Leone.

MAISL is a coalition of over 45 CSOs with structures at the district, regional and national levels.

SLPMB awards farmers in eastern Sierra Leone

As part of encouraging Agricultural activities in the Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Board (SLMPB) has on Friday 25th October 2019 distributed prices to six cocoa and coffee co-operative organizations in the Eastern region of Sierra Leone.

The Administrative Manager of  SLPMB, Ibrahim Fofana awarded the prices to the six best cooperative cocoa farmers based on the quality of their produce in 2018 SLPMB trade fair in Kenema.

Transfer saga as 2 Sierra Leone clubs claim Baimba’s signature

FC Kallon and FC Johansen have both claimed that they have signed East End Tigers striker, Baimba Sesay. The striker who scored 12 goals in Sierra Leone’s top tier league last season, is one of the hottest commodities in the current transfer market.

Baimba played for East End Tigers in the Premier League last season, helping them finished 9th in the league.

A Sierra Leonean widow’s entitlement to her late husband’s property

In 2018, two weeks after her husband of 25 years had been buried, Mariatu (cannot give her full name) was summoned to a meeting by her in-laws. One of them, Kabbah, said thus: “The family has agreed that your husband’s younger brother would take you as his fifth wife. He will be in charge of your three children and his brother’s property. You cannot refuse or else you have to leave the home empty-handed. This is our custom.”
