Sierra Leone journalists get training on reporting human trafficking

Thirty-five journalists from Freetown on Friday went through a one-day media training on issues related to human trafficking.

The training which was coordinated by the Ministry of Social Welfare and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is geared towards increasing knowledge and encouraging reportage about human trafficking.

Second year Sierra Leone varsity student to launch event management company

Ishiatu Fofanah, a second year student at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, is all set to launch an event management company.

Ms Fofana, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer of the company, Madam Planner, informed news men on Friday that the launching ceremony is slated for the 29th November, at the Atlantic Lumley Hotel. The launching will be done under the Distinguished Grand Chief Patronage of Dr. Mary Okumu, Country Representative UN Women.

No increase in university fees in Sierra Leone - USL assures

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) says there has been no increase in fees for any of its constituent colleges, following public outcry that fees had gone up.

USL in a statement signed by its Registrar, Olive Barrie, says: “The government directs that Tuition fees should not be increased in the university and the management of the University of Sierra Leone strictly abides by that.”

Former Sierra Leone president to speak at Nnamdi Azikwe event

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma is to deliver the keynote address at this year’s lecturer series remembering Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikwe, the former President’s office announced on Tuesday.

According to a statement released via social media, the office said Koroma departed Freetown on Tuesday for Awka in Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria.

Koroma, according to the statement, is the guest of the Nnamdi Azikwe University, which is hosting the event.

Damning Amnesty report warns of “appalling” rights violations in Guinea

The rights watch dog Amnesty International has called on Guinean authorities to address mounting human rights violations amidst ongoing protests by pro-democracy activists in the country.

Guinea has been on the cusps of civil unrests over the last four years after elections in 2015 when President Alpha Conde was re-elected for his second and final term. Since those disputed elections, public discontents have been growing in the face of the deteriorating socio-economic situation in the country.

Sierra Leone anti-graft agency clears Chief Minister on bribery allegation

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says investigations it mounted revealed that Chief Minister Prof. David Francis has nothing to answer for in an alleged bribery.

Prof. Francis became the subject of public discussion for much of Monday and Tuesday after it emerged that he’d ordered the arrest of a journalist who sent him text message on Monday enquiring about the alleged bribery involving US$1.5million.
