Sierra Leone gets first Prison Beauty Queen

Twenty year old Sia Kembe from Bo was crowned 'Miss Correctional' on Friday in the maiden edition of the National Female Inmates Beauty Pageant.

Ms Kembe beat nine other fellow inmates drawn from correctional centers across the country.

The Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) hopes to use the annual event as a way of reforming the inmates, in line with the idea of correctional system.

Sierra Leone’s economic outlook “challenging”

While Sierra Leone’s economy continues to recover, its outlook remains challenging, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) review mission has found.

The mission which concluded its review on Wednesday November 13, hailed the government's development programme and noted that its focus on improving its citizens' well-being is an ambitious endeavor. But it also had pointers for the government in its effort to meet its commitment in line with agreements with the Fund.

New Code of Conduct for teachers in Sierra Leone

The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission (SLTSC) has validated a new Code of Conduct for teachers which is expected to come into force next academic year.

Officials at the Commission said the new code, which is a revised version of the existing Code, is geared towards increasing efficiency and promoting professionalism in the teaching profession.

Director, Teacher –Employee Relations, SLTSC, Princess Mattia, told Politico that the reviewed Code was designed to match with current laws and regulations of the country.

European Film Festival kicks off in Sierra Leone

The 2019 edition of the European Film Festival in Sierra Leone premiered on Friday at the British Council with the screening of a British made movie about a child-led family.

The movie, Jellyfish, which stars British actress Liv Hill as Sarah Taylor, explores the issues surrounding child abuse and the effect children and their upbringing.

Jellyfish is one of 16 films lined up for the eight-day long festival being held on the theme: ‘The rights of the child.’

Sierra Leone Planning Minister commits to women’s empowerment

The Minister of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), Dr. Francis Mustapha Kaikai, has reaffirmed the Sierra Leone government’s commitment to the empowerment of women and girls.

“Our Government will continue to march in solidarity with all women and girls as we strive to ensure that no segment of our population is left behind,” Dr. Kai-Kai said.
