Sierra Leone to establish sex offenders' registry

The Sierra Leone Government is working on the establishment of a database for convicted sex offenders as a means of protecting girls and women from sexual abuse.

Every individual who is convicted of sex offense will be registered and their details stored in a national sex offender registry, an official told Politico.

Sierra Leone Parliament expunges non-accountable imprest from 2020 Finance Act

The Sierra Leone parliament on Friday voted to remove a controversial section in the 2020 Finance Act which would have given an open cheque to the President, Vice President and Speaker of Parliament while traveling abroad.

Section 42 of the Finance Act of 2020 which was passed last month relates to a non-accountable imprest given to the three top government officials for overseas travel. It exempted them from accounting for how they spend the money.

Local NGO engages schools on corruption in eastern Sierra Leone

A local Non-Governmental Organization, People’s Power Movement (PPM), has engaged school pupils and head teachers in Kenema on the essence of supporting the fight against corruption in the country.

The program which was held on Friday was part of the commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day. Pupils and teachers from five different schools in the district were targeted for the one day sensitization programme.

Timbo urges Sierra Leone's trade unions to represent members’ interest

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Osman Timbo, has urged Trade Unions to endeavor to represent the interest of their members. Mr Timbo said his administration would begin scrutinizing the activities of all registered trade union groups to ensure they effectively deliver services to their members, noting that it is the responsibility of unions to ensure their members were appropriately informed to ensure this.

Sierra Leone Gov’t rejects NUSS President

The Sierra Leone Government has said it doesn’t recognize the choice of Joseph Amara Bangura as president of the National Union of Students (NUSS).

Student Union presidents from various colleges across the country recently announced the selection of Bangura as head of the umbrella national student body after a botched attempt to conduct an election, after over a decade without a legitimate body representing students. They made the selection during the NUSS delegate conference on 29th November in Kenema.
