“Drunk” Sierra Leone Police officer fights bosses over case assignment

Detective Inspector James Junisa of the Eastern Region Division of the Criminal Investigation Department in Kenema is under investigation after he was briefly detained for fighting his bosses over disagreement on the handling of a case.

Momoh Bebeh Vandi, Deputy Regional Crime Inspector, told Politico that Junisa assaulted him and other senior officers in an effort to resist attempt to reassign a case from him, which he had assumed without authority. Vanid said they later found out that Junisa was drunk at the time.

Sierra Leone to end exam fee for private schools next year

The Government of Sierra Leone will not be paying examination fees for private schools from next year, Politico has learnt.

At official at the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) said this current academic year will be the last for the government to pay for public exams for candidate taking the Basic Examination Certificate Examination (BECE) and National Primary School Examination (NPSE) exams.

Kenema Police “under-resourced”

Police in Kenema have said they do not have the necessary logistics to properly secure the region. Politico’s investigation in the district showed that the Kenema Police station doesn’t have a vehicle to respond to calls or conduct patrols within the district.

Through our weeklong observation, we learnt that officers trek in groups to do patrol within Kenema city. They also hire motorbikes to attend to cases in far distances under extreme circumstances.

The African Guarantee Fund (AGF) has received the sum of USD33 Million to support Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) across Africa. They announced this in a press release on Thursday.

The organization which focuses on providing financial guarantees for over ten thousand (10,000) SMEs is a Kenyan based NGO which seeks to empower business startups across the continent.

Sierra Leone President sacks Labour Minister Timbo over distribution of Chinese donated rice

Minister of Labour Alpha Timbo and Deputy Minister of Education, Emilia Gogra have been sacked and subjected to investigation over their handling of a school feeding programme.

A statement from the presidency on Friday listed the duo alongside two other top officials in the Education Ministry - Charles Kamanda, Permanent Secretary and Mamusu Massaquoi, Director of Nutrition – who are being investigated for their role in how they handled a “huge” consignment of rice that was donated by the Chinese government.
