Sierra Leone president reiterates commitment to achieving SDGs

Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio has reiterated his government's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) especially in the area of education, peace and justice. 

President Bio was speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the UAE Sustainability Week Summit in Abu Dhabi, on Tuesday, January 14. 

Hospital head gets bail after charged with illegal conversion of hospital generator gets bail

The Medical Superintendent at the Bo Government Hospital, Dr Peter Belmoh Samai, has been given a Le200 million bail after his first appearance in court on Thursday.

The bail condition also includes two sureties who are landowners in the district.

Dr Samai faces three counts charges of unlawful dispossession of property, misappropriation and abuse of office. He was arraigned in front of Justice Alfred Tommy Ganda where he pleaded “not guilty” to all three charges.

Eastern Polytech students threaten strike in Sierra Leone

Students of the Eastern Polytechnic in Kenema have threatened to embark on protest in response to a leaked document from the Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education suggesting that the institute might not be upgraded to a university anytime soon.

Sierra Leone media scholar launches book on Human Rights

Prominent media scholar, Dr Seaga Shaw is set to launch a book on human rights and peace building. The book which is co-authored with Dr Senthan Selvarajah focuses on reporting key human rights issues in conflict areas in the world.

Dr Shaw is the head of the Rights to Access Information Commission (RAIC) in Sierra Leone.

The title of the book is Reporting Human Rights, Conflicts, and Peacebuilding: Critical and Global Perspectives.

Sierra Leone Gov’t calls for increased local participation in farming

The government of Sierra Leone, through the ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has called for greater local participation in agricultural activities to help ensure food security in the country. 

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Sam-King Braima, made the call at the weekly government press briefing on Thursday.

Sierra Leone male secret society members attack female Paramount Chief

Unidentified members of the ‘Poro’ secret society over the weekend attacked the female Paramount Chief of Kpanda-Kemo Cheifdom in Bonthe District.

PC Melrose Foster Gberie her home was attacked and vandalized in the incident which happened on Saturday evening, and she believes it is because of her opposition to the initiation of underaged boys.

44% of Sierra Leone's hotels, guest houses unregistered - report

The latest report on the Tourism sector in Sierra Leone has revealed that 44% of hotels and guest houses are not registered with the National Tourist Board.

The report, titled: National Tourism Census in Sierra Leone, which was done by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with Statistics Sierra Leone, was launched on Monday. It reveals that there are 459 accommodation facilities in the country which are either hotels or guesthouses, only 56% of which are registered.
