Judiciary tours Sierra Leone's prisons

Members of the Judiciary of Sierra Leone last week conducted a tour of correctional centers in Freetown as part of activities marking the end of the 2019-2020 criminal session.

The tour which was preceded by a jail delivery by Justice Alusine Sesay, was meant to ensure that the services offered by the centers match international human rights standards.

Aftermath of PWD fire disaster…disabled victims call for a workable housing solution

The disabled community, which was partly affected by the recent fire incident at PWD on Pademba Road in Freetown, has called on the government and its partners to provide them with a permanent housing solution.

The fire incident destroyed properties worth over Le5million, mostly properties owned by the disabled community, and it left many of them homeless and in a state of anxiety with the approaching rainy season.

Sierra Leone president attends UK-Africa Summit

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio was set to join about two dozen African leaders at the opening of the maiden edition of the UK-Africa Summit in London, which the British government said was meant to promote bilateral trade and investment between the UK and Africa.

President Bio is one of 16 African heads of state that were expected to attend the summit that will attract over 1500 delegates from the continent and the UK business communities.

Sierra Leone: Africa's oldest university "can’t afford" electricity meters for newly refurbished hostels

A report done by the Student Union of Fourah Bay College (FBC) has revealed that the administration cannot afford to pay for meters to be installed on the newly refurbished student hostels, sparking fears of a possible delay in their usage.

The report, which details the state of affairs of the college, is a transition document by the recently installed Student Union executive.

Sierra Leone halts school bus service

School bus services have been halted across the country due to the inability of the authorities to management them, leaving students struggling to get to school.

The services have been halted specifically in Bo, Kenema and Freetown, at least for the last one week, Politico learnt.

Sierra Leone Chief Justice instructs compulsory sentencing for sexual offences

The Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards, has instructed all judges across the country to adopt and administer the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act NO.8, 2019.

In a memorandum issued on January 6th to judges, Justice Edwards states that judges must administer the compulsory sentence as provided for by the newly adopted sexual offences Act. 

Sierra Leone frees Liberian protest leader

Following protests by civil society groups, the Sierra Leone government finally released Liberian activist Henry Costa.

Mr Costa was on a transit en route the United States when he was detained for three hours by immigration officers on Wednesday.

Following his detention, civil society activists condemned the government, calling for his immediate release.

Costa is the leader of the Council Of Patriots (COP), a pressure group that has been a very vocal critic of President George Weah’s government.
