University of Ghana suspends lecturers for sexual harassment

Two lecturers of the University of Ghana who were disgraced in the BBC undercover documentary have been suspended without pay for what the university describes as misconduct.

Professor Ransford Gyampo was handed four months and Dr. Paul Butakor got six months of suspension. The university announced the decision in a press statement on Monday.

Sierra Leone roads authority demolishes buildings in Bo

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has demolished two buildings owned by Lebanese businessman Husain Jaward. It comes after the Authority said the buildings were “illegally” erected in their right of way.

An excavator moved in on Sunday morning to demolish the buildings.

Sierra Leone student protests overshadow FBC 193 anniversary celebrations

Ceremonies marking the 193rd anniversary of the foundation of Fourah Bay College on Monday were characterized by students protesting over the shortage of graduation regalia.

The protests started shortly after the arrival of the Vice President, Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh to attend an Open Day ceremony. A group of students started shouting out their concerns before the situation was quelled by the VP’s security forces.

Sierra Leone Youth Ministry disburses Le 1 Billion for fishing project

The Ministry of Youth Affairs has disbursed over Le 1 Billion for the construction of 70 fishing boats for youths. The boats will be used to revive the moribund Youth in Fisheries project.

The Ministry made the announcement in a press release on Friday. The amount represents 30% of funds for the construction of the boats.

The project was given to seven national contractors.

Gov’t to terminate First Tricon contract in eastern Sierra Leone

The government of Sierra Leone is set to terminate the contract of First Tricon, the company constructing the long delayed Kenema township road.

An official said the decision was due to the delay in the completion of the contract which was blamed on the company.

The contract was first awarded in 2016 by the Ernest Bai Koroma administration. It followed cries of neglect from the people of Kenema in terms of the deteriorating nature of their roads.

Sierra Leone police seize “smuggled” fuel bound for Liberia

Police in Bo say they have seized a huge consignment of fuel destined for neighboring Liberia.

The fuel was contained in 329 five-gallon sized rubbers.

A police spokesman told Politico that several arrests were made as a result of raids conducted on Friday.

The raids were conducted with support from the bike riders in the Bo township, who had complained that fuel stations were refusing to sell fuel to them and instead were selling to hoarders at a higher price.

3 revenue officials indicted for corruption in Sierra Leone

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed an indictment against three officials of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) for allegedly misappropriating public revenue worth over five billion leones (Le5bn).

The Commission, in a statement on Friday, said all three officials have been charged accordingly and were expected to be arraigned later this month.

All three of the accused worked in the Report Processing and Return Payment (RPRP) Department of the NRA.
