NATCOM’s floor price to stay in place for three months

The Ministry of Information and Communication has said that the new floor price policy by the National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM) will stay in place for at least three months.

On Wednesday, during the government’s weekly press briefing, Information Minister, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, said a committee had been set by the ministry to do a review of the policy which has provoked widespread public anger.

Deaf and mute “rape” case: Mother recalls hearing daughter screaming

The mother of the 13-year old deaf and mute girl who was allegedly raped last year has testified in the ongoing preliminary investigation recalling hearing her daughter screaming as she ran towards her room to stop the accused, Samuel Joseph Bassie, from raping her.

The woman (name withheld) was testifying on Wednesday, the 3rd hearing, before Magistrate Abdul Sherriff of Court Number 3. She was the second witness to testify in the matter which started on March 3rd.

OSIWA holds dialogue on SGBV

The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) has held a dialogue session on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the country. The panel discussion, which was held as part of the International Day of Women celebration, took place at Shangri La, an entertainment center in Freetown.

The discussion was moderated by TV journalist, Antonia Howard. The topic of discussion was: ‘’Examining Women’s Rights: Reversing the Scourge of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in Sierra Leone.”

President Bio and World Bank Rep in Sierra Leone discuss Coronavirus

President Julius Maada Bio has held talks with World Bank Country Director, Pierre Frank Laporte, on preparations to deal with the novel strain of the Corona virus.

In a meeting on Tuesday at State House, President Bio told Laporte that the country had learnt from its experience during the fight against Ebola and would use that in preparing for Coronavirus, in the event it spreads to the country.

ActionAid Sierra Leone unveils new budget

The charity, ActionAid Sierra Leone, has launched its budget for the 2020 working year. The budget, which has a total expenditure of Le11 billion, will be invested in the implementation of the organization’s five-year work plan, officials said.

The revelation was made at a public disclosure of ActionAid’s annual programs on Wednesday, which officials said was part of the culture of openness it had been practicing for over a decade.

Sierra Leone sports betting company signs Le 5 billion school project

Mercury International, the betting company, has signed a Le 5 billion project with the architectural firm Ideas Limited for the construction of an all-female school in Port Loko District.

The two companies signed the deal in a press conference on Wednesday, where officials said the construction project which would start later this month was expected to be completed before the new academic year in September.

Sierra Leone sports betting company launches campaign on responsible gambling

The betting company, Mercury International, has launched a new campaign against underage gambling. The campaign will also advocate for responsible gambling, officials of the company said.

The campaign dubbed “Stay in Control” was launched at a press conference on Wednesday at the company’s branch office at Bathurst Street in Freetown.

Managing Director of Mercury International, Martin Michael, said at the occasion that Mercury International took responsible gambling “very seriously.”
