FGM underestimated – new report

A new report on Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting (FGM/C) has revealed that the extent of the practice has been underestimated.

The report which was published last week revealed that FGM, which is also called Female Genital Cutting (FGC), is occurring in over 90 countries and is far more widespread than it’s generally thought. Importantly, it reveals that the number of women and girls who are affected is woefully underestimated.

Mining stakeholders engage on new mining law in Sierra Leone

The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources and the National Minerals Agency have held a one-day consultative meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector in the Southern region.

The meeting was designed to solicit the views and concerns of the relevant stakeholders regarding the ongoing review process of the 2009 Mines and Minerals Act.

Sierra Leone drivers fight back over Covid-19 transport restrictions

Drivers of commercial transport vehicles briefly halted their services over the weekend and part of this week following the latest restriction announced by the Government of Sierra Leone as part of measures to prevent a spread of the coronavirus disease in the event it spills over into the country.

The move ordered by the Ministry of Transport and Aviation was meant to enforce adherence to health and safety regulations and calls for social distancing.

Sierra Leone quarantines president's son, nephew

Charles Wonnie Bio, the eldest son of President Julius Maada Bio has been living in quarantine since he arrived from the United States over the weekend.

So has James Bio, the president’s nephew.

The measure is part of the government’s policy of an automatic quarantining of any one who arrives in Sierra Leone from a country that has recorded up to 50 confirmed cases of coronavirus.  

The 26-year-old is staying in one of the hotels identified for the purpose, according to Dr Songor Koedoyoma, the chief of the Lungi Command Centre.

Sierra Leone declares State of Emergency

Sierra Leone is to operate under a State of Emergency effective March 24, 2020, President Julius Maada Bio declared on Tuesday, the latest measure by the government in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Bio said in a televised statement that the move was meant to enable the government appropriately respond to the pandemic by protecting Sierra Leoneans and the economy from the effect of the global disease outbreak.

6 more arrested over missing police officer in Sierra Leone

A total of 17 people have now been arrested by Police in Magburaka in connection to the disappearance of an officer.

Sergeant Nathaniel Lamin went missing during investigation of a conflict between cattle herders.

A police spokesman told Politico that the latest arrests were made on Monday. Earlier on Saturday, Superintendent Samuel Saio Conteh, the Deputy Head of Media at the Sierra Leone Police, had said 11 people were in custody in connection to the case.
