Met warns weather pattern will impact Sierra Leone crop production

The Deputy Director General at the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), Gabriel Kpaka, has told Politico that the shifting weather pattern in the country will have an impact on the quantity of agricultural yields the country will produce this year.

The revelation is part of their recently launched Seasonal Forecast of the Agro-hydro-climatic characteristics of the rainy season for Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone gets $100 million World Bank grant

Sierra Leone has secured US$100 million grant from the World Bank to support economic resilience in the country. The Board of Directors of the World Bank approved the grant in a meeting on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Bank’s country office.

The statement quoted Country Manager, Martin Gayle, saying: “This financing will help address fiscal challenges and improve overall governance to build resilience and enhance the delivery of services to the people amidst this global COVID-19 pandemic.”

Magistrate Bonnie rejects Blyden’s application

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown has ruled that the court has no jurisdiction to determine or interpret the session of the application made by the former Social Welfare minister Dr. Sylvia Blyden for count 7 of the 9 counts against her to be expunged on grounds of timeliness.

Sierra Leone gets new armed forces chief

President Julius Maada Bio has appointed a new head of the army in a minor change on Wednesday.

Major General Sullay Ibrahim Sesay was named as the new Chief of Defense Staff, replacing Lieutenant General Brima Bureh Sesay.

A statement from the Office of the President, which also announced the appointment of Brigadier General Peter K Lavahun as the new head of the Joint Forces, said the decision was reached with the advice of the Defense Council.

BAN supports quarantined residents with food items

The Budget Advocacy Network (BAN) has supported quarantine residents in 22 communities in Pujehun District, southern Sierra Leone, with food and non-food items worth Le138 Million. 

The support, according to BAN’s Senior Program Officer, Abdulraman Morlson Sesay, is to complement the government’s effort in the fight against the Coronavirus disease through their Health Legacy Project supported by Christian Aid Sierra Leone.
