Sierra Leone announces new dates for WAEC public exams

The Ministry of Basic and Senior School Education and the West Africa Examinations Council have agreed new dates for the three public examinations, both have confirmed to Politico.

The minister, Dr Moinina Sengeh says the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) will take place 3 August and while the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will start on the 14 September which will last for between and 10 days including weekends.

All freed in Fourah Bay College murder case

An eleven-member jury has unanimously returned a “not guilty” verdict in a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder and murder as laid in the indictment against six members of the Klymax Club of Fourah Bay College.

All six accused persons – Francis Mafinda, Dennis Holland, Lawrence Lahai Amara, Abassie Sesay, Mukeh Foh and David Williams – were standing trial before Justice Ivan Ansumana Sesay of the high court in Freetown.

Word Bank approves $30 million for agriculture in Sierra Leone

World Bank has approved a US$30 million grant for Sierra Leone to support agricultural productivity and access to markets for small holder farmer agribusinesses.

The US$30 million fund is from the International Development Association to the Smallholder Commercialization and Agribusiness Development Project (SCADeP).

Probe begins into killings in northern Sierra Leone

The Independent Police Complaint Board (IPCB) has commenced preliminary investigations into the conduct of security personnel who fired live bullets at protesters in the Northern city of Makeni over the weekend. Five people died and at nine others were injured during the skirmishes.

Sierra Leone Magistrate fears for his safety

The Resident Magistrate of Kenema, Joseph Tobby has expressed fear for his safety saying he is worried that he may be harmed by an OSD officer.

The officer, Lamina Kallon, was his state-assigned guard and has now fled after allegedly stealing from his residence.

Expressing “serious doubts” about the conduct of the police force itself, Magistrate Tobby said: “I am disturbed in mind about state of security because if a police officer that should protect civilians now turns to do such thing then what is happening”.

Moyamba to light up after 40 years

The southern Sierra Leone district of Moyamba is set to get electricity for the first time in 40 years. Over the weekend the Minister of Energy and other officials signed a deal with the Indian power provider, Shivary Company for the electrification of the district.
