Sierra Leone Embassy in Guinea hosts NPSE exams

The premises of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Guinea was one of the examination centers that hosted this year’s National Primary School Examinations (NPSE) which was held on Monday 3rd August.

The Chancery Building in Kipe, a suburb of the Guinean capital, Conakry, hosted 350 Sierra Leonean pupils who had been attending English schools in the French speaking country.

The NPSE marks the completion of Primary School education in Sierra Leone. Students who pass the examination proceeds to Secondary School.

Bio meets Cuban medics in Sierra Leone to help fight Covid19

A group of 16 medical doctors and nurses, who are part of the Cuban Medical Team in Sierra Leone, have met with President Julius Maada Bio.

The meeting which was held at State House in Freetown was meant to introduce the medics who were deployed into the country to help its respond to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The team, accompanied by the Cuban Cuban Charge’d’ affairs in Sierra Leone, were presented to the President by Minister of Health and Sanitation, Professor Alpha Tejan Wurie.

UK hails Libel Law repeal in Sierra Leone

The UK Minister for Africa has congratulated the Minister of Information and Communication of Sierra Leone, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, following the vote by parliament in Freetown to repeal Part V of the Public Order Act and the passing of the new Independent Media Commission Act.

Fake US dollar bills in circulation in Sierra Leone - Police say

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has warned of fake US Dollar in circulation across the country and called on the public to beware while transacting in the currency.

The police in a statement issued on Monday said they were investigating the development.

“In view of this, the SLP would like to advise everyone to exercise maximum precaution when transacting in United States' currency notes,” the police statement said.

74% approval rating for education in Sierra Leone - Afrobarometer

The latest Afrobarometer survey has revealed that 74% of Sierra Leoneans say the government is doing “fairly well” or “very well” in addressing the country’s educational needs. This rating is significantly higher than the 2015 score, when just 38% of respondents believed that the government was handling educational well.

WAEC invigilators in Sierra Leone threaten to boycott BECE, WASSCE

Some teachers who serve as examiners for the West African Examination Council (WEAC) have threatened to boycott the conduct of upcoming national exams over failure to pay them past allowances.

The aggrieved teachers were speaking during this year’s National Primary School Examination (NPSE) which was conducted on Monday, August 3. They said WAEC had failed to pay them – both invigilators and supervisors - for services rendered last year for conducting the Junior and Senior Secondary School examination (WASSCE and BECE).

WHO funds training for Sierra Leone lab technicians

Some 30 scientists have begun training as laboratory technicians as part of efforts to boost Sierra Leone’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The training, which is taking place at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) New England Campus, is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO).
