Two arrested for alleged child trafficking

The criminal investigation department in Bo is investigating two people for an alleged trafficking of an 11-year old boy.

The two suspects, Foday Mansaray and Moinina Bundu of Lungi Village in Jiama Chiefdom, Bo District, according to police, conspired to sell Borbor Mansaray.

WFP, MOHS launch treatment program for malnourished children and mothers

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), with support from Irish Aid, Japan and Edesia have launched a treatment programs for moderately malnourished children and pregnant women across the country.

The program, which was launched on the 14th of August 2020 in Kenema, eastern Sierra Leone, targets over 64,000 children from 6-59 months, as well as pregnant and lactating mother across the country.

Sierra Leone Police accused of illegally auctioning impounded Okadas

The union representing commercial motor bike riders, known as Okada, have accused traffic police officers of illegally converting bikes they impound into personal property.

The Sierra Leone Bike Riders Union said police officers illegally take ownership of the bikes when they arrest their owners for minor traffic offences, detain them, only to release them when their bikes will have been done away with in fraudulent auction processes.

Schools to reopen in September

Schools are to reopen next month, according to a Press release from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE). The release says that the decision was reached ‘’after extensive consultations by stakeholders and policy makers in the education sector’’. 

Pre- primary schools are to reopen on the 15th September, whilst Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary Schools will resume classes on the 5th October, according to the statement. 

ACC, education stakeholders plan against exams malpractice

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), in collaboration with various stakeholders in the education sector, have called on supervisors and invigilators of public examinations in Sierra Leone to work towards ensuring that the ongoing public examinations are free of malpractices.

The institutions made this call at a meeting held in Koidu Town, eastern region of the country on Thursday 13th August. The meeting attracted teachers, principals and other players in the sector.

Sierra Leone's new Mines Minister meets civil society

The recently appointed Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR), Musa Timothy Kabba, has assured Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of his commitment to the effective management of the country's natural resources.

He made the assurance during an engagement with members of the Natural Resources Governance and Economic Justice Network (NaRGEJ), a coalition of CSOs working on the sector in Sierra Leone.
