The world is celebrating the end of the wild polio in Africa, for the first time since the end of small pix in 1980. With the rest of the world Sierra Leone, which has hundreds of people left paralysed by the debilitating disease, is basking in the glory, according to a joint press release by the World Health Organisation and the Government of Sierra Leone.

Nurse escapes from quarantine

The District COVID-19 Emergency Response Center (DICOVERC) in Pujehun has informed Politico that a nurse has escaped quarantine since last Thursday, and that efforts to recover her were under way.
The Spokesperson for the DICOVERC, Mohamed Massaquoi, said on Tuesday that the nurse who had tested negative for the virus during the first 14 days period in quarantine was waiting for her third test result when she abandoned the quarantine center.
The female nurse had spent 22 days in total in quarantine.

Land dispute leaves 5 wounded

Clashes over land between two villages in Pujehun District, southern Sierra Leone, has left at least five people hospitalized as a result of alleged gunshot wounds.
The two villages Bomi and Gbanahun in Peri Chiefdom, Pujehun District, according to district authorities, have been having disagreement over who owns the particular piece of land under dispute. The issue has gone to both the chiefdom and district authorities who set up a committee to look into the said issue.

FBC students launch drive to establish e library

The Students Union Government (SUG) of Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone (USL), has launched a campaign designed to equip the college’s library with much more relevant books and to establish an e-library portal for remote access by students. The student body is leading the efforts in collaboration with the college administration.

ONS allays public fear of violence
The Office of National Security has issued a statement in which it made references to what it says were intelligence estimate indicating that known and unknown individuals have been engaging in activities including making pronouncements that are tantamount to disrupting the peace and stability of the country. The general public is being assured by the Security Sector that it is in full control and that people were encouraged to ‘’go about their business without any cause for alarm”.

Blama gets two new Transformers

The Ministry of Energy has installed two new transformers in Blama Town, Kenema District, eastern Sierra Leone.
Energy Minister Alhaji Kanja Sesay presided over the installation at a ceremony on Saturday 22nd August. The 160kilo watts and 200 kilo watts transformers were installed in the same town that is located in the Small Bo Chiefdom. Mr Sesay noted that President Julius Maada Bio had promised electricity to the people, which is what he, as Energy Minister, has been delivering on across the country.
