Apathy towards facemask major obstacle to ending pandemic – report

The latest edition of “The Monitor”, a periodic publication by the campaign group Center for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL), has highlighted a widespread “unwillingness” in the public for the use of facemask. The report says apathy towards facemask usage is one of the major challenges in the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations.

Family of ‘drowned’ police officer suspects foul play

The family of Mohamed Alvin Conteh, a police officer who reportedly drowned in a river at Matombo Village in Thonkolili District, northern Sierra Leone, is calling for an investigation into the cause of his death.

The family of the deceased believes that he was killed and they suspects the involvement of his girlfriend, who police say is in custody pending investigation.

Civil society gets training in new ACC Act

Foundation for Rural and Urban Transformation (FORUT) has trained members of civil society organizations in Kenema on the Amended Anti-Corruption Commission Act of 2019.

Program Director of FORUT, Alhassan Jalloh, said the essence of the training is to build the capacity of civil society activists in the district with the goal of helping them understand and advocate better against corruption.

‘‘Rioters’’ at Minister’s residence committed to the high court

Magistrate Mark Ngegba has committed to the High Court the case involving Ali Sajah Foster, Victor Emmanuel Sesay and Micheal Abass Turay, who are accused of conspiring to murder the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Lahai Laurence Leema.

This followed the end of preliminary investigations in the matter.

In his committal address on Friday 11th September 2020, Magistrate Ngegba noted that the prosecution had enough evidence, making the accused persons fit to be tried at the High Court.

Sierra Leone's Met installs 60 rain gauges

The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet Agency), in an effort to prevent unforeseen disasters, has commenced the installation of 60 rain gauges across the country.

The process is under an African Development Bank (AfDB) support project to the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO), Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency and the National Water Resource Management Agency (NWRMA).

Windfall for teenage mothers in Kenema

Future Focus Foundation, a community volunteer group, has provided start up kits for twenty-five teenage mothers following the conclusion of a two-year skills training project in Kenema.

National Team Leader of the Foundation, Sylvester Sidie Kallon, said the support which they got from Child Hope UK, will help to empower the women and ensure they become self-reliant.

Kallon states: “Each group has five trainees and each will be entitled to three tailoring machines with necessary tools attached to it.

PRA halts construction of fuel station

Sierra Leone’s Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) has put a hold on the construction of a fuel station in the southern district of Bo and fined the owner for failing to follow the right procedures.

Regional Manager, PRA, Albert Yarjah, told Politico that they had two months ago advised Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, who owns the fuel station, to go by the rules and regulations but that he failed to adhere and continued with the construction work.
