Hajjgate trial: Wife of 1st accused testifies

Ann Marie Kamara, wife of the first accused Sheka Sahid Kamara, has testified before Justice Reginald Fyn at the High Court in Freetown in the ongoing Hajj-gate trial on an eight-count indictment of corruption and related offenses.

Makeni riot: Investigating officer testifies in court

Detective Police Constable 9268 Joseph Jay Collins, who participated in the investigation of the recent violent unrest in the northern city of Makeni, has testified before Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown in the ongoing preliminary investigations into a seven-count charge including conspiracy to commit an offense and carrying offensive weapons without lawful authority. The cases involves 13 accused.

Two remanded for murder

Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown has remanded 65 year-old Lamin Sesay and 35 year-old Kaprr Sesay at the Correctional Services at the start of preliminary investigations into seven count charges, which include conspiracy to murder, wounding and assault.

The accused persons made their appearance on Thursday 10th September, 2020

“ACC was used against me” - Nigerian Prof.

Nigerian Professor Emmanuel Femi Gbenga Ajayi has said that the Anti-Corruption Commission was used against him to hurt his reputation. Prof. Ajayi, who was investigated and later vindicated by the ACC on suspicion that he held fake degrees, was speaking at a press conference organized by the rights group, Native Consortium on Wednesday.

Ajayi who said he has forgiven the ACC for their “mistake”, noted that the commission could have handled the investigation better than they did.

Parliament halts Kingho’s activities in Sierra Leone

The Transparency and Accountability Committee in the House of Parliament has ordered the Chinese iron ore miner Kingho not to undertake any activity under their current license until they get clarity about their financial status, ownership structure and a number of issues.

Sierra Leone Parliament detains central bank officials

The Transparency and Accountability Committee in Parliament briefly detained two officials of the Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL) on Tuesday for allegedly refusing to attend to the committees summon on time and for failing to come along with the Governor of the Bank.

The two officials were shortly released after the Bank Governor, Professor Murana Kallon showed up at the committee room one and denied any knowledge of receiving any summon.

Special Court rejects Charles Taylor’s transfer request

The Residual Special Court of Sierra Leone (RSCSL) has rejected an application by former Liberian President Charles Taylor’s Defence Counsel to be temporarily transferred from his jail cell in the United Kingdom to a “safe third country” out of fear of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taylor is currently serving a 50-year jail term in HMP Frankland Prison in the UK after being convicted of 11 counts of war crimes charges, which included aiding and abetting former rebels of Sierra Leone’s disbanded Revolutionary United Front.
