Councilor calls for support for Portee flood victims, after one dies of hypertension…

One of the victims of the August 25th disaster in Portee, which left over 60 people homeless, have died of hypertension at the Rokupa Government Hospital in Freetown.

The disaster happened in the aftermath of a heavy down pour in the capital city, which experts said expanded an old crack that had been identified on the ground by the Office of the National Security (ONS), leading to the destruction of five houses within the affected area.

ACC launches probe into SALCAB

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has told to Politico that it has launched an investigation into the Sierra Leone Cable Network Limited (SALCAB). The Director of Public Education and External Outreach, Patrick Sandy said the investigation is looking into several issues all bordering on misappropriation of public funds.

Soldier in court for “stealing” from wife

Corporal Samson Sesay, a serving member of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), has appeared before Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown to answer to a one count charge of domestic and economic violence brought up against him by his wife.

The accused made his first court appearance on Tuesday 15 September, 2020, for allegedly threatening her and stealing $8,600 and Le7million from his wife, Nurse Agnes Bendu Sesay.

Sierra Leone expands search for Covid-19 cases

The National Covid-19 Emergency Response Center (NACOVERC) is expanding its Active Case Search project designed to increase Sierra Leone’s Covid-19 testing coverage.

Six more districts with high prevalence of Covid-19 cases are being added to the list.

When it was launched back in June, the project, also known as Enhance Surveillance Surge, only targeted the Western Area (Urban and Rural), which were considered as the epicenter of the pandemic in the country.

The report says apathy towards facemask usage is one of the major challenges in the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations.

Family of ‘drowned’ police officer suspects foul play

The family of Mohamed Alvin Conteh, a police officer who reportedly drowned in a river at Matombo Village in Thonkolili District, northern Sierra Leone, is calling for an investigation into the cause of his death.

The family of the deceased believes that he was killed and they suspects the involvement of his girlfriend, who police say is in custody pending investigation.

Civil society gets training in new ACC Act

Foundation for Rural and Urban Transformation (FORUT) has trained members of civil society organizations in Kenema on the Amended Anti-Corruption Commission Act of 2019.

Program Director of FORUT, Alhassan Jalloh, said the essence of the training is to build the capacity of civil society activists in the district with the goal of helping them understand and advocate better against corruption.
