New UN country chief named for Sierra Leone

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has appointed Babatunde Ahonsi as new Resident Coordinator of the global body in Sierra Leone, Politico has learnt.

Mr Ahonsi, a Nigerian, was named on Monday, 21 September, according to a UN news report. The report said the new UN country chief was appointed with the host government’s approval.

Preliminary investigations into a seven count charge including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretenses and money laundering against Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Hussain Shiham, Dialo Abou Djiby and Ignatius Thomas has continued before Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown.

Led in evidence by ASP Hawa Bah, detective sergeant Osman Kanu attached to the Anti-Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters recognized the accused persons and said he knew the complainant as an Indian Business Man.

Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown has remanded 27 year-old Dauda Kanneh alias Gunshot into the custody of the Correctional Services at the start of preliminary investigations into a five-count charge including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, malicious damage and threatening to kill.

Mahmoud Tim Kargbo, a journalist and an eye-witness to the beating of deceased journalist Ibrahim Samura of New Age newspaper, has testified before Justice Augustine Musa at the High Court in Freetown in the ongoing trial of former Mayor of Freetown Herbert George Williams and the Public Relations Officer of the opposition APC in the Western Area Abu Barkarr Daramy, both accused of murdering Samura.
