Sierra Leone to conduct survey on persons living with disabilities

The Minister of Social Welfare, Baindu Dassama Kamara, has announced plans to conduct a survey to determine the number of Persons with Disability (PWDs) living across the country. Kamara said the data will help the ministry plan to address the challenges of PWDs in Sierra Leone.

The Minister was addressing PWDs in Kenema at the National Commission for Persons with Disability office in the district.

Labourer gets 13 years in prison for sexual penetration

Justice Jamesina King of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced thirty-five (35) year-old Alimamy Conteh, a labourer, to thirteen (13) years imprisonment after he was found guilty of sexual penetration of a 13 year-old girl.

Delivering her judgement, Justice King said she was satisfied that the prosecution had proven its case beyond doubt and therefore found the accused guilty of the offence charged, adding that she found the evidence against the accused to be unshaken during cross-examination as well.

FOCUS 1000 conducts training of trainers for religious leaders on malaria

The Health NGO FOCUS 1000 has conducted a training of trainers for religious leaders on communications on malaria prevention and control.

The training session held on Wednesday, September 30, and hosted at the Charm’s Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, brought together about 24 people, mostly Imams and Pastors, from within the Western Area.

Organized with support from the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Sierra Leone, the participants were drawn from the Kombra Network, the community engagement arm of FOCUS 1000.

Sierra Leone investigates suspected African Swine Fever outbreak in the north

Scientists at the Central Veterinary Laboratory at Teko in Makeni are analyzing samples from dead pigs, amidst fears of an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), health authorities say.

The samples were collected from Rogbere Village in Masimera Chiefdom, Port Loko District, northern Sierra Leone, were local health authorities had raised alarm following reported multiple deaths of pigs, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS).

20, 000 rabies-prone animals to get vaccination in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone on Monday embarked on a mass vaccination exercise targeting 20, 000 animals prone to the rabies disease, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) has said.

An official told Politico that the exercise was designed to coincide with the 2020 commemoration of World Rabies Day (WRD) which falls on September 28.
