Sierra Leoneans call for lifting of curfew

There have been growing calls for an end to the curfew imposed under the current state of emergency instituted in response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

These calls have particularly increased in light of the reopening of schools reopen, amidst already difficult situation with the public transportation system in the capital Freetown.

Magistrate Mark Ngegba has committed to trial in the High Court the case of Mariama Sajor Barrie and Ibrahim Bah, both accused of murdering five-year old Kadijah Saccoh. The magistrate rejected a no-case submission put forward by defence lawyers at the end of preliminary investigation into the matter.

Violence on the eve of Guinea election

Violence erupted in Conakry on Friday, two days before Guinea’s controversial election.

At least one person, an army commander, died when alleged army mutineers storm a military barracks in Kindia in the northeastern region of the country. Details are sketchy about the incident, which comes on the backdrop of defiance by prodemocracy groups against incumbent president Alpha Conde’s alleged plan to maintain power.

Defence Lawyers “Concerned" about Kamarainba’s Health

Lawyers representing the 2018 presidential candidate of the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP), Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, who is standing trial on an eight-count indictment including conspiracy and sexual penetration, say they are concerned about the ‘‘serious health condition’’ of their client. Mansaray is being held on remand at the Pademba Road correctional center.      

3 farmers associations allege deprivation of fertilizer

Three men claiming to represent three farmer associations in Karene and Port Loko districts have accused two District Agriculture Officers of failing to provide them with fertilizer for this planting season, despite having followed all procedures laid down by the Ministry of Agriculture. The men, who came to Politico in a visibly angry mood, blamed two District Agriculture Officers (DAOs) Francis  Kekura and Charles Bangura of stifling their efforts to get the fertilizer that they say the Ministry is supplying farmers in different parts of the country.

Anti-Corruption Commission Clears University of Sierra Leone Secretariat

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) has been cleared of any wrong doing by the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) with regards to investigations the Commission launched following the release by the Accountant General’s Office of Audit Reports for the period 2015-2018.

A recent statement from the ACC said probing was conducted with a view to prosecuting or recovering public funds, public revenue or public property as mandated by the anti-corruption Act of 2008.

MRU conducts training on Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis

Within the framework of the implementation of the ''Ecosystem Conservation and International Water Resources Management of the Mano River Union” project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF)', the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) and the National Executing Agency in collaboration with the Mano River Union, Regional Executing Agency, organized on October 14, 2020, in Bo city, a training workshop to strengthen capacity of national actors.
