SGBV cases on the Increase in Falaba, northern Sierra Leone

Records at Mongo Bendugu Police Division in Falaba District revealed an increase in cases of rape and other forms of gender-based violence against women and children across the newly created district. Victims are from poor communities with very little or no access to medical facilities.

EU Deputy Ambassador Commissions Rainbo Centre in southern Sierra Leone

The work of the Rainbow Initiative in the fight against sexual violence has received a major boost with inauguration of a new center in Bo.

The Rainbow Center in the southern district brings to six the number such facilities across the country.

The establishment of the Bo facility, which is located within the premises of the Bo government hospital, was funded by the European Union, through the European Union Delegation to the Country. 

Feminist United holds consultative dialogue

The women’s rights campaign group, Feminist United Sierra Leone and Allies, on Saturday 5th December, held a roundtable discussion, dubbed Dialogue on Feminism Agenda in Sierra Leone.

Feminist United and Allies is a social movement of Young Africans that seeks to challenge the great imbalance of the status quo of societies. It preaches equality of both sexes in terms of the enjoyment of opportunities and rights.

Defence lawyers representing the Chairman and leader of the Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, who’s standing trial on an eight-count indictment which include conspiracy, sexual penetration and meeting a child for sexual purposes, have disclosed that their client was removed out of hospital where he was undergoing medical treatment against the advice of doctors.

Sierra Leone's Connaught oncology department gets big boost

The Oncology department of the country’s main referral hospital – Connaught – has received a major boost with critical medical supplies, thanks to the humanitarian gesture from a private citizen.

A consignment of medication worth £3,000 was donated to the Palliative Care Team of the department by anti-cancer campaigner, Tina Davies.

A news dispatch from her communications team said the donation made on Friday, December 4, was part of her “annual humanitarian gesture” towards people battling cancer.

Sierra Leone Tertiary Commission clashes with another errant college

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is at loggerheads with yet another tertiary institution over accreditation.

The TEC is accusing the management of the Professional Global Training Institute (PGTI) - SL Limited of operating a learning institution without going through the mandatory accreditation process. After a statement early last week ordering the institute to shut down, the TEC leadership used the police to forcefully implement the order.

Ghana votes in tight election

Ghanaians are going to the polls today, Monday December 7th, in what promises to be round 2 of the 2016 elections that brought incumbent president Nana Akufo-Addo to power.

In the 2016 election, Mr Akufo-Addo defeated the then incumbent president John Mahama, who is making a comeback.

Akufo-Addo, 76, is running under the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while the Former President Mahama, who is 62, is running under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
