Sierra Leoneans complain about the state of the economy

In a general assessment of the government in 2020, Sierra Leoneans across Freetown have called on the government of Sierra Leone to work on improving the prevailing economic situation in the country.

Their dissatisfaction revolves around the economic situation of the country especially with the high cost of food stuff and other basic commodities.  This has been made worse by COVID19 that has seriously impacted businesses.

Covid19 returns to Pujehun, southern Sierra Leone

There has been an alarming upsurge in the number of new infections of the coronavirus in parts of Pujehun district in southern Sierra Leone.

Official figures show that the district recorded three new cases of Covid19 on the 10 January 2021, after it had gone for 130 days without.

Sierra Leone: Kambia votes again in March

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has declared Saturday 6 March 2021, as the date for the local council bye-election in Ward 192, Kambia District.

A press release signed by the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, dated 15 January 2021 states that the seat was declared vacant following the death of Councilor Alpha Sannie Kamara, who died on the 12 December 2020.

Young people meet in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone

A youth group, Voice of Hope Youth Organization Sierra Leone, has concluded a two-day International Youth Empowerment Summit at the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) which started on 15 January.    

It was attended by youth groups from across the country.

Sierra Leone’s public universities on strike

The academic staff members of all three state universities in Sierra Leone are on strike over pay and conditions.

Njala University and Ernest Bai Koroma University have joined their colleagues at the University of Sierra Leone (comprising FBC, IPAM and College of Medicine) to stop work until they get a 100% pay rise from the government.  

The industrial action, which started at the USL in the middle of exams in December, has stalled the start of the new academic year.
