Civil society concerned over new Sierra Leone mining bill

Civil society organisations working in the extractive sector have presented to the mines minister their inputs and observations about the draft Mines and Minerals Development Bill due to be laid before parliament.

According to the Natural Resource Rights and Economic Justice Network Sierra Leone (NaRGEJ), they did so in response to a call for their inputs and contributions to the draft legislation made by the minister, Timothy Kabba. 

Covid-19 compliance drops in eastern Sierra Leone

The head of surveillance for Kenema district attached to the district Health Management Team (DHMT) has expressed concern over a drop in the compliance rate of Covid19 regulations in the district.

Speaking to Politico, Koi Alpha said that “Since 2020 to date which is over 148 days now Kenema district has not recorded any new case of Covid19”, but said he was worried over the lack of compliance from the people especially relating to the use of face masks and handwashing

Big boost for Sierra Leone farmers

410 tractors, fertilizer applicators, seed broadcasters and power tillers valued at over $18 million have arrived in Sierra Leone to support private sector farmers in mechanised farming.

They are to be pre-positioned in seven centres to service the numerous   farmer groups across the country.

Explaining to journalists, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abubakarr Karim explained the diverse and expansive agricultural projects that the government has embarked on in different parts of the country.

Ultramodern Hospital for Kerry town, outside Sierra Leone capital

President Julius Maada Bio has on Friday 22nd January 2021 Launched the Sierra Leone Health Village and also Turned Sod for the Construction of an Ultra-Modern General Hospital at Kerry Town.

Kerry Town, Western Rural District of Sierra Leone served as a major treatment center in the Western Area during the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic which claimed thousands of lives in the over a year stay in the country. 

New Media Studies book launched in Sierra Leone

A book titled Media Studies – Critical African and De-colonial Approaches which is a collection of articles contributed mostly by seasoned scholars with knowledge on Africa media was on Friday 22 January 2020 launched in Freetown by veteran Sierra Leonean media personality Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw.

The event at the Sierra Library Board hall which attracted senior media scholars, practitioners and students also saw a review of Dr. Shaw’s written chapter ‘Critical Perspectives on African Journalism’.

Sierra Leone: Graphic account of the Rogbere killing

Residents of Rogbere Junction in Port Loko District are still in shock following the brutal killing of a 33-year-old popular businessman Mohamed Kamara commonly called ‘Speed O’.

Reports say a group of people believed to be armed robbers broke into his home in the early hours of Wednesday 13 January 2021 and subsequently killed him.

Sierra Leone capital isolated from rest of the country

Freetown and its environs are to be cut off from the rest of the country in a bid to stem the spread of the new wave of Covid19.

A statement from NACOVERC says effective 25 January the Western Area will go into a partial lockdown for two weeks. Movement from and into the region will be restricted to only essential travels that will be regulated by an Electronic Pass system. Even those allowed to travel will be subjected to a Covid19 test.

A nationwide 10 pm to 5am curfew will also come into force within the same period.
