Sierra Leone’s president to visit Guinea on Monday amid frost in relations

President Julius Maada Bio is to visit Guinea on Monday for talks with his opposite number there as part of continued efforts to resolve the disagreements between the two countries. 

It follows a visit to Freetown by the Guinean Foreign minister, Ibrahim Khalil Kabba which came after a high powered Sierra Leonean delegation had gone to Guinea and held talks with President Alpha Conde. 

Foreign minister Kabba submitted a letter to President Bio in which President Conde invited him to visit. 

Calls to regulate foster parenting in Sierra Leone

Defense for Children International (DCI) has called for stiffer policies and regulations binding those who may wish to take children of either blood relations or friends for nurturing, away from their biological parents either within or outside Sierra Leone.

The DCI Executive Director, Abdul Manaff Kemokai said that if the call was adhered to, it would save more Sierra Leonean girls from domestic and cross border trafficking which mostly occurs in the guise of caregiving or fostering.

Sierra Leone: Jui traders ask for compensation

High level engagements have continued between local authorities and traders at Jui whose wares were over the weekend destroyed by a team from the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) in the enforcement of its Right of Way. Some of the wares were also looted.

The traders had set up stalls and shops in shipping containers in areas along a side of the Freetown Teachers’ College (FTC) fence where numerous businesses had sprung up in recent times.

In the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, election petition continues

The legal battle in favor and against the validity of the 2018 presidential election that brought President Julius Maada Bio to power has continued before the Supreme Court in Freetown before Chief Justice Desmond Babatunde Edwards and four other Judges.

Continuing his argument against the petitioners on Monday, Lawyer George Banda-Thomas who represents the president and the SLPP party, being the 3rd and 4th respondents in the matter said that the petitioners did not disclose their course of action as provided for by law.

Sierra Leone president agrees to scrap the death penalty

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Professor David Francis says President Julius Maada Bio has officially given a directive to abolish the death penalty from the country’s statutes.

He made this statement on Thursday 4th February 2021 during the first presidential award for best performing ministries at State House in Freetown.
