FBC lecturers express fear after death of colleague on campus

Lecturers of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone occupying quarters on the college campus in Freetown have expressed fear for their safety following the apparent strangling to death of their colleague. Mr. Authur Edger Smith of the Language Studies department was allegedly attacked and murdered in his flat in the Lower Faculty area of the campus on Sunday 14th March, 2021.

IMF expends $50 million to Sierra Leone

In support of Sierra Leone’s economic needs amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, the executive board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has under its Rapid Credit Facility (RCF) approved the disbursement of US$50.37 million aimed at cushioning the pandemic’s economic impact on the country.

The disbursement, according to the global monetary institution is to help the country meets the urgent balance of payments and fiscal needs stemming from the deep and persistent impact of the pandemic.

Caretaker jailed 10 years for wounding with intent

Justice Monfred Sesay of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced 45-year-old property caretaker, Alhaji Alpha Bangura, to ten years in prison following his conviction on one count indictment of wounding with intent.

In his judgment on Tuesday 16 March 2021, Justice Sesay told the court that it was the duty of the prosecution to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt in view of the offences for which the accused was charged.

Man jailed 15 years for sexually penetrating a minor in Sierra Leone

One Sulaiman Gibateh has been sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment after he was found guilty of two counts of sexual penetration and sexual touching against a 15-year old girl.

Delivering his judgment on Monday 15th March 2021, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens said that the evidence adduced before the court indicated that the incident took place in January 2019 and that the victim told the court that the accused took her to his house because he was a close friend of her father.

Catholic mission cancels pilgrimage in Sierra Leone

The Catholic Mission in Sierra Leone has cancelled this year’s Lenten Pilgrimage saying it wants to comply with COVID-19 prevention and control measures. In a statement issued last weekend, the Mission noted that “The COVID-19 situation in the country, especially in the Western Area does not favor a very large gathering like our Lenten pilgrimage which attracts huge crowds each year. It would be difficult if not impossible to observe faithfully the NACOVERC protocols especially social distancing’’.

Sierra Leone Parliament summons Transport minister

The Leader of the opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC) in parliament, Chernor Maju Bah has expressed concern over the safety of commuters on the country’s road network. He said the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority appears unable to minimize the many road accidents taking place in the country.
