VSO engages stakeholders on the SDG indicators

Ahead of the government report on the progresses made in meeting commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators, the Civil Society Consortium and Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) through the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development on the 19th May engaged stakeholders in Kenema.

The engagement according to officials was to get the views of the different agencies, women groups and youths organizations on the achievement of government on sustainable development goals.

Sierra Leone opens first mental health clinic for children

For the first time in Sierra Leone a child and adolescent mental health facility has been opened.

Situated at the Kissy Psychiatric Hospital, the first in sub-Saharan Africa opened in 1820, the facility was established through funds raised by Ariana Oluwale who runs an early childhood center in Freetown.

Sierra Leone MP claims leading medical laboratory is state-owned

Tonkolili district Paramount Chief Member of Parliament, Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sanka III, has claimed that ECOMED a medical diagnostics and laboratory facility that is situated at 19 off Upper Kingharman Road, Brookfield in Freetown, is supposed to be a government- owned property.

Speaking in the Well of Parliament, on Thursday the 20th May, 2021, he said government was supposed to have 60% shares, while the public and the Ghanaian medical doctors have 20% each. 

COVID19: Sierra Leone a low risk country

Storm hits Falaba District headquarter

A heavy rain storm on Monday 17 May 2021 has left  a sizeable number of  people homeless in the Falaba district headquarter town of Mongo Bendugu.

12 dwelling houses and the Ansarul Islamic Nursery, Primary and Secondary School buildings were destroyed by the storm with learning materials completely buried under the rubble.

The storm also affected farming activities with damages done to stores containing crops, other farm produce and seeds. Agricultural tools were also lost.

Sierra Rutile to suspend operations

The Iluka Resources Limited has in a press statement announced suspension of Sierra Rutile operations in Sierra Leone due to certain difficulties encountered by the business.

According to the statement, the six month notice is a result of the acute business challenges the company has been facing, particularly since the covid-19 outbreak, noting that its operational performance has been below expectation which has resulted in  financial unsustainability.

DCI urges Sierra Leone gov't to decentralize sexual offences court

The Eastern Region Programmme Manager for Defense of Children International (DCI) in Kenema has called for the sexual offences court to be brought to the doorsteps of victims and perpetrators in the provinces. Mojama Senesie made the request at a press conference held in Kenema on 18 May 2021.
