WASSCE pupil acquitted

Justice Momoh-Jah Stevens has acquitted Jacob Musa, a WASSCE pupil who was standing trial for sexual penetration of his 17-year-old girlfriend.

Justice Stevens said yesterday 13th January this year that the evidence of the prosecution witnesses who testified against the young man were ‘incoherent’.

Bio says entrenched clauses won't be rushed through Parliament

President Julius Maada Bio has asserted that no entrenched clause in the reviewed Constitution of Sierra Leone would be rushed through Parliament, ahead of the country’s General Elections. He made the statement whilst launching the Government White Paper on the Constitutional Review Process at State House on Wednesday 13 January 2022.

The president’s assurances would help assuage the concerns expressed by critics that his government might attempt to have laws passed by Parliament that would disadvantage the opposition.

Rainbow supports SGBV sensitization drive

In a bid to continue their usual sensitization of women and girls, Rainbo Initiative a national non-governmental organization on the 13th January 2022 funded 8 communities in Freetown with the sum of twenty-four million Leones (Le, 24,000,000) to embark on awareness-raising activities on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).  

The project according to the Project Assistant Coordinator for Rainbo, Mary Yomba is a European Union-funded project with a lifespan of thirty months.

Low women inclusion in Presidential clemency- NGOs

Calls have been made for more women in detention who are faced with challenging situations to be included in the Presidential Pardon process. Two organisations Advocaid and Purposeful in a press release expressed dismay that only five women were included in the list of160 inmates that benefitted from the 2022 New Year presidential pardon granted to people serving time.

Human activities dry out River at Estuary Resort’

The Estuary Resort located around John Obey which once had a beautiful river is now a muddy pond. According to the Proprietor of the Resort Abdul Karim Jalloh, this is due to man-made activities in the environment. As a result of this and many other destructive activities, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in tandem with the Sierra Leone Tourist Board and investors around the John Obey Community have conducted an assessment and held a meeting with the community people.

Reshuffle: Alpha Khan appointed Minister

In the latest reshuffle of cabinet and other agencies and parastatls, President Julius Maada Bio has appointed Alhaji Alpha Saidu Bakar Kanu of the All Peoples Congress (APC) as the Minister of the North -Western Region. Until his appointment, the position was occupied by Haja Isata Abdulai-Kamara who is now the new Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.
