FIU reviews Anti-Money Laundering

In an effort to combat money laundering and tackle the financing of terrorism, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Sierra Leone has on the 27th January 2022 held a regional consultative conference on the review of the anti-money laundering and combating of financing of terrorism Act No 2 of 2012 in Kenema.

IOM identifies unofficial border crossings

A number of unofficial border crossing points have been identified along with the three districts of Pujehun, Kailahun and Falaba Districts following a report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under its Displacement Tracking Matrix. IOM conducted a mapping exercise in the final quarter of last year in three districts to monitor the trends in trans/border mobility between Sierra Leone and the neighbouring countries of Liberia and Guinea.

Local Content commits to MOU with Insurance Company

The Director-General of the Sierra Leone Local Content Agency (SLCA) Fodeba Daboh has in a press briefing assured of the Agency’s commitment to a   Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the Sierra Leone Insurance Company (SLICOM) in July 2020.

SLAJ celebrates new IMC Commissioner

The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ahmed Sahid Nasrella has welcomed the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) of Sierra Leone, Dr. Victor Massaquoi saying that this is the first time that a SLAJ recommendation for the Chairperson of the media regulating body has been approved.

Speaking to Politico, Nasralla said that the group had previously nominated candidates for the position, including the last appointment but that the governments have always done contrary.

Sierra Leone records drop in sexual assault cases

A report by Rainbo Initiative Sierra Leone has revealed a 7.2 percent drop in the number of sexual assaults cases accounting for 2,966  (Two thousand nine hundred and sixty-six) in 2021 from 3,339 (three thousand three hundred and thirty-nine) cases in 2020 across their five their centres. With a difference of 373 (three hundred and seventy-three) cases.

“The scale of sexual assault has decreased by 7.2 percent’’, ‘’however this does not in any way suggest that there is a change in behavior of the people,’’ the report reads.

MDAs to request for allocation of SDR

According to the Coordinator of Budget Advocacy Network (BAN), Abu Bakarr Kamara, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) has asked that Ministries, Department, and Agencies (MDAs) request for allocation from the 45 million dollars of the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) fund for them to implement their various projects.
