"Expedite auditor general’s case” - MP calls

Leader of the main opposition party in Parliament Chernor Maju Bah representing constituency 126 has asked that the justice system expedite the Audit Service case.

Speaking in parliament on the 30th May 2022 on the issue of justice in relation to President Julius Maada Bio’s address to parliament last month, Bah said: “The office of the auditor general is very sensitive, the more they expedite it (tribunal), the better for us as a nation”.

Faulty air conditioner shuts down Parliament

Parliamentary sitting was called off yesterday after the air cooling systems in the chamber stopped working effectively, drawing the frustration of the lawmakers.  

The angry MPs later addressed the media, making their feelings known.  Siaka Musa Sama from Pujehun district said he was extremely disappointed, having to travel all the way so he can contribute to a bill titled the Tobacco and Nicotine Act of 2021, which he described as very important, only for the issue of the air conditioner to surface. 

New calls for cancellation of Sierra Leone census data

The National Elections Watch (NEW) has in a press statement called on the government of Sierra Leone to cancel data generated from the 2021 Mid-Term census for which provisional results were released on Tuesday, 31st May 2022, noting that it was ‘flawed’ and not representative of the country’s population.

Sierra Leone announces new water rate

The Sierra Leone Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (SLEWRC) has announced new tariffs and prices for all categories in the supplying and selling of water across the country.

The new tariffs and prices will come into effect on the 15th of June 2022, according to the Director-General of the SLEWRC, Dr. Emmanuel Mannah, upon presenting the current and approved prices yesterday 2nd June 2022 at the weekly press briefing hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications in Freetown.

Sierra Leone’s new population is 7.5 million

Provisional results of the 2021 Mid-Term Population Census say the Eastern Region is the most populated in the country.

Making report of the census public in Freetown yesterday Stats SL said the eastern province has a total population of one million, nine hundred and thirty nine thousand, one hundred and twenty two (1,939,122), that accounted for nine hundred and fifty three thousand, six hundred and one (953,601) males and nine hundred and eighty five thousand, five hundred and twenty one (985,521) females.

Sierra Leone antigraft body sacks two

Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission last month sacked two of its staff and put a third through an internal disciplinary process which is ongoing.

According to the Director of Communication and Public Education the general conduct of the two was “deemed to have a negative effect on the credibility of the commission”.

MoD dismisses shooting allegation

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has dismissed allegations that a soldier serving with the presidential guard was shot and killed by his colleague because he complained about a delay in the monthly supply of their 50 kilo bag of rice for May, 2022.
